A Stay at Watergate Bay: The Ultimate Cornish Escape
There’s something magical about Watergate Bay, where the rhythmic pulse of the ocean soothes your soul and adventure beckons just beyond the doorstep. Jon and I were fortunate to experience a blissful escape here, nestled in one of their Beach Lofts overlooking the rugged Cornish coast.

Day 1: Settling into Our Beach Loft We arrived on a crisp Wednesday afternoon, greeted by the welcoming atmosphere of Watergate Bay Hotel. The Beach Loft was everything we imagined: expansive floor-to-ceiling windows, a cosy yet modern design, and an unbroken view of the Atlantic that takes your breath away. The sound of waves crashing against the shore creates an instant sense of calm as we unpack and unwind. Each loft is unique, boasting access to the beach from the lobby – perfect for surf-in, surf-out adventurers. There's even a wetsuit room and board storage, adding to the convenience for any wave chasers.

After settling in, we explored the property before heading to Zacry’s for dinner. The restaurant combines Cornish produce with global flavours, serving up a three-course meal that is as hearty as it is refined. Each dish, from the starter to the dessert, felt thoughtfully crafted, bringing together the best of Cornish flavours with a delightful twist. It's a true culinary experience wrapped in the warmth of candlelight and a relaxed yet sophisticated setting.

Day 2: Surf, Relax, and Pamper Our morning began with breakfast in bed overlooking the beach. You can have brekkie in the comfort of the loft or on the beach in a hamper from the pantry. A freshly brewed coffee paired with the sweeping sea views was the perfect start to our day.

By mid-morning, we were heading out for a surf lesson with Wavehunters. The instructors were superb, ensuring Jon and I felt both challenged and at ease on the water, even as beginners. Watergate Bay’s consistent surf break is a dream for surfers, and Wavehunters made sure we experienced the best of it.
Surfing Through the Wind: A Challenge Worth Embracing
Our surf lesson was nothing short of exhilarating. It was one of those wild, windy Cornish days where the breeze whipped across the shore, making the waves all the more challenging. But somehow, instead of feeling daunted, it only added to the thrill of it all.
I’m typically the first to feel the cold, but not this time. Even with the blustery winds, the combination of the wetsuit and the adrenaline kept me perfectly warm – a rare treat for someone who’s usually wrapped up in layers. It’s incredible how the right gear and the right place can make such a difference, and for once, I found myself fully immersed in the experience without a single shiver.

As for the lesson itself, I won’t pretend it was easy. The wind made it harder to balance, but that only made every moment on the board feel like a small victory. Jon managed to get on his feet for a split second, which was an achievement in itself given the conditions. It was one of those moments that left us both laughing and determined to try again. The feeling of catching a wave, even briefly, is unlike anything else – freeing, exhilarating, and deeply satisfying.
By the end, we were hooked. It’s one of those experiences everyone should have at least once in their life. The sense of accomplishment and sheer joy that comes from pushing yourself outside your comfort zone, especially in a place as beautiful as Watergate Bay, is unforgettable. We walked away from that lesson not only having learned a few new skills but with a newfound passion for surfing that we can't wait to explore further.
If you ever get the chance to take a surf lesson, don’t hesitate. Whether you’re a total beginner like us or someone looking to hone their skills, Watergate Bay offers the perfect setting to dive in and embrace the challenge – wind or no wind.

Lunch at The Beach Hut brought the relaxed vibe that defines Watergate Bay. We opted for a two-course lunch, indulging in local seafood with the waves lapping nearby. With a menu focused on sustainability and local produce, it felt like we were truly tasting Cornwall. And one not to be missed is the whipped cream and hot chocolate...! That really sells itself!

By the afternoon, it was time for some indulgence at the Swim Club.
Relaxation at the Swim Club: A Perfect End to an Active Day
After the thrill of our windy surf lesson, the Swim Club at Watergate Bay was the ideal spot to unwind.
I loved the tranquil infinity pool overlooking the ocean – a serene place to let go of any tension. I was kindly treated to a complimentary full-body massage, and it was just what I needed. The therapist was brilliant, not only easing away the tension but offering some valuable tips and advice on self-care and how to keep my body feeling healthy in the long run. It felt like a real reset, and I left feeling completely rejuvenated.

The pool was warm and serene, a welcome contrast to the invigorating sea breeze. As the sun began to dip, we ventured outside to the hot tubs and sauna – both boasting stunning views of the beach. There’s nothing quite like soaking in the warmth while watching the waves roll in.
It was the perfect way to end an active day, a blend of calm and luxury that left us feeling completely refreshed. The care put into every element of our experience, from the land&water products used to the expert hands of the therapists, left us feeling pampered and rejuvenated.

Dinner with a View: A Perfect Evening by the Sea
That evening, we dined at the hotel’s restaurant, where the atmosphere was calm and welcoming. The moment we stepped in, the warmth of the space and the soft glow of candlelight made us feel instantly at ease. As we enjoyed our meal, the sound of the waves crashing against the shore outside added to the experience, creating a soothing backdrop to the evening.
The food was delicious, each course showcasing fresh Cornish ingredients with a creative twist. With the sea just outside the window, it felt like a perfect harmony of nature and fine dining, making the meal as memorable as the view. It was the kind of peaceful, satisfying experience that stays with you long after the plates are cleared.

Day 3: A Bittersweet Goodbye Friday morning came all too soon. We savoured another delicious breakfast, followed by a final stroll along the beach. The private access from our Beach Loft made it easy to dip our toes into the sand one last time before checkout. It’s hard to say goodbye to such a beautiful escape, where every detail is designed to connect you to the elements, whether through an exhilarating surf or simply gazing at the horizon from the warmth of your room.
Watergate Bay isn’t just a hotel; it’s a sanctuary where luxury meets adventure, offering the perfect blend of relaxation and excitement. We left with full hearts and a promise to returning soon....
